The artillerist is an inventor who harnesses the primal force of elemental power, channeling its power into a weapon of unmatched devastation. Spectacular and terrible, these weapons bring fear to their foes and awe to their allies.
At 3rd level, you gain proficiency with tinker's tools. If you are already proficient with tinker's tools, you instead gain proficiency with another set of artisan's tools of your choice.
At 3rd level, you gain the following spells. They do not count against your spells prepared, and count as Artificer spells for you. You only gain the spells when you have spell slots for them. The spells are listed by their spell level.
1st Level: Chromatic Orb, Thunderwave
2nd Level: Blur, Scorching Ray
3rd Level: Counterspell, Lightning Bolt
4th Level: Vitriolic Sphere, Wall of Fire
5th Level: Cone of Cold, Wall of Force
Beginning at 3rd level, your research has resulted in the creation of an Arcane Sidearm, which uses the following rules.
Crafting your Sidearm. During a long rest, you can spend 1 hour crafting an Arcane Sidearm using tinker's tools. You can only have one Arcane Sidearm, and crafting another causes previous Arcane Sidearms to lose their power.
Appearance. An Arcane Sidearm is a Tiny object that can be used as a spellcasting focus for Artificer spells. You choose its appearance, though this has no effect on its abilities. Many Artillerists craft Sidearms that resemble delicate wands of wood, ornate metallic rods, or even runic iron cannons.
Infusions. Your Arcane Sidearm can bear special infusions detailed at the end of this page. You must learn the infusions like normal, and they can only be applied to your Arcane Sidearm.
As an action, you can use your Arcane Sidearm to produce one of the following effects listed below.
Arcane Lance. You make a ranged spell attack against one target that you can see within 120 feet. On hit, it takes force damage equal to 1d10 + your Intelligence modifier.
Shocking Burst. You conjure a burst of lightning at a point you can see within 60 feet, forcing creatures within 5 feet to make a Dexterity saving throw. Creatures take 2d6 lightning damage on a failed save, and half as much on a success.
Thunderous Blast. You emit a blast of thunderous force in an adjacent 15-foot cone, forcing creatures within to make a Strength saving throw. On a failure, they are knocked back 10 feet in a straight line and take 2d6 thunder damage.
At 5th level, you wield your Arcane Sidearm with deadly skill. Whenever you use an action to produce an effect from your Arcane Sidearm, you can produce two effects instead of one. These effects can target the same target or multiple targets. You can pick the same effect twice, or two different effects.
The number of effects you can produce with a single action increases as you gain levels. At 10th level, you can produce 3, and at 17th level, you can produce 4.
Also, when you use your action to cast an Artificer spell, you can produce one Spell Slinger effect as a bonus action.
At 10th level, you can add your proficiency bonus to initiative rolls. Additionally, when you roll initiative and aren't surprised or incapacitated, you can use your reaction to use one Spell Slinger effect.
At 15th level, your skill with your Arcane Sidearm is unmatched. You gain the following benefits.
When you or another creature you can see within 30 feet is targeted by a spell or magical effect, you can grant it three-quarters cover against the effect as a reaction.
You have advantage on counterspell ability checks.
When you deal damage with a Spell Slinger effect or Artificer spell, you can cause it to deal force damage.
Being within 5 feet of a hostile creature does not impose disadvantage
Your Arcane Sidearm has a +1 to hit and damage. You can take this up to three times, increasing the bonus by an additional +1 for each time taken.
The range on all of your Spell Slinger effects are doubled.
Once per turn, when you deal damage with your Arcane Sidearm, you can choose to deal an additional 1d6 thunder damage.
Once per turn, when you deal damage with your Arcane Sidearm, your speed increases by 10 feet, and attacks of opportunity are made with disadvantage against you.
